Unacademy started life as a YouTube channel in 2010 when CEO Munjal (right), then an engineering student, started uploading tutorials. Soon, he asked his friend Saini (left), an MBBS from AIIMS who had cracked the civil services, to upload tutorials for IAS aspirants. Singh joined some days later as the CTO of the on - line education platform which brings together educators and students. With its two arms—‘Unacademy Learning App’ and ‘Unacademy Educator App’—the Bengaluru-based startup has more than 10,000 registered educators and 10 million learners. With over 50,000 courses in more than 10 Indian languages, it has attracted much investor interest. The company has raised $38.6 million funding from investors such as Sequoia, SAIF Partners, Nexus Venture Partners, and Blume Ventures. Last October, it acquired Jaipur-based online education and career portal WiFiStudy to boost its presence in smaller towns and cities. The same month, it launched a paid service called Unacademy Plus—a private discussion platform with live video classes featuring the educators. Unacademy says since its launch, the service has achieved sixfold growth in monthly revenue.
