In an unusual move, FreeCharge founder Shah returned to lead the company after Snapdeal acquired it for a massive Rs 2,400 crore last year. The lure for Snapdeal is to create a payment system to go with e-retailing, like eBay did with PayPal and Taobao with Alipay. FreeCharge has been relatively late to the mobile wallet business, and Shah’s senior-statesman chops—he was recently appointed chairman of the Internet and Mobile Association of India—will be critical for it to catch up.
