From 2000 to 2005, Bajpai was just another analyst at economic research firm Indicus Analytics, busy rating panchayats and e-governance programmes. Realising that local languages were ignored on the Internet—content could not be indexed because around 10 million pages in Hindi did not have a uniform font—he set up Netlabs along with colleague Laveesh Bhandari and help from Indicus. Netlabs operates Raftaar, a Hindi portal. “This is a new industry. There is scope to develop search engine optimisation, advertisements, and branding in Hindi,” says Bajpai. The site gets 2.3 million unique visitors and 8.5 million page views a month. Though 60% of revenue comes from ads (which it shares with Google), Bajpai is trying to link advertising with search queries on Raftaar. On the cards: a mobile-friendly Raftaar.
