Saraf still gets butterflies in his stomach while cracking a deal, though he’s been at it since 1995. His specialisation, oil and gas, is complicated because of multiple forces at work—new finds, changes in regulations, geopolitical shifts, etc. These impact deals even at the last minute. A bad market has made things worse. Despite that, he closed 23 deals worth $25 billion last year. His three-year track record isn’t too bad either: 40 deals worth $42 billion. The complex Vedanta restructuring, which started in 2012, spilled into 2013. His tip to other deal makers: Get creative. It helps in getting the client’s attention.
