A big portrait of Steve Jobs adorns Urban Ladder’s Bangalore office. “His products are a triumph of design, technology, and business. That’s what inspires us,” gushes Srivatsa. Besides being Ratan Tata’s third investment in an e-commerce venture, Goel and Srivatsa claim their company has grown four times over the past year and is on its way to becoming the largest player in India’s unorganised furniture market. They also claim an average ticket size of Rs 20,000, which is significantly high in Indian e-commerce. Focus on innovation based on genuine consumer insight is a big draw: Last year, Urban Ladder developed an augmented reality app that has resulted in 100% rise in sofa sales post trials. UL Labs, its R&D arm, is trying to solve problems like lugging furniture up staircases, as most multistorey buildings in India do not have lifts.
