There have been allegations that Agarwal’s versions of Oyo’s journey don’t quite add up. But 156 cities and towns and 40,000 rooms across 4,000 hotels is reason enough to laud him for a designed-for-India idea—standardised experience in hotels. Oyo’s numbers make it about four times the size of competition (by number of rooms), and that’s why investors put $125 million last year into it. His moves have made many established names uneasy: MakeMyTrip announced that it will enter standardised hotel aggregation. While increase in competition will mean Oyo burning more cash, at stake is a high-margin opportunity.
