Flipkart’s Big Billion Day sale on October 6 was lambasted for overpricing, items running out of stock, and the site crashing under a deluge of traffic. The founders issued a public apology the following day. But the stats aren’t nearly that bad. Flipkart saw 1.5 million shoppers that day. In 10 hours, it notched sales of $100 million. To put things in perspective, that was its gross merchandise sales in all of 2011. Out of the 5 million shipments in October, the sale fetched 2 million. The Bansals believe Flipkart, which attracted investments of $2 billion last year, is now ready for hyperlocalisation, connecting local sellers with buyers.
