1. How do you see the role of a Public Relations Officer evolving in today's rapidly changing world?
Led by innovation, industry trends are changing faster than ever. Media has also kept pace with these changes through the emergence and popularity of new platforms. It has become necessary for a Public Relations Officer (PRO) to stay updated with these changes and adopt agile communication strategies. Leveraging digital tools, using social media, data analytics, and proactive engagement to effectively manage corporate reputation and stakeholder relationships have become crucial today.
2. What strategies do you use to maintain constructive relationships with journalists and media houses?
First of all, PROs should put in the effort to establish trust and credibility by providing accurate and timely information. This goes a long way in countering misinformation, which is widespread on social media. I consider it my good fortune to work under the leadership of Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT & KISS, who has always held the media in very high esteem as the fourth pillar of democracy. Inspired by his vision, we prioritise maintaining a constructive relationship with journalists and media houses. As part of this, we regularly interact with journalists and media houses through press releases, media kits, and by organising events and interviews.
3. How do Public Relations Officers ensure effective crisis management?
PROs should have good coordination with different activities and processes of the business and identify areas of potential risk. They should have carefully framed standard operating procedures to follow in the event of a crisis. This will help activate a crisis response team quickly and send clear and consistent messages to the media and other stakeholders. Rapid, unambiguous responses, transparency, and regular updates are key to managing and mitigating crises effectively.
4. How do Public Relations Officers effectively enhance its public image?
The company's public image is enhanced by highlighting its achievements and initiatives. A PRO should craft positive narratives around these achievements and initiatives and ensure the widest possible reach. They should also ensure consistent messaging across all communication channels. Working in sync with marketing and branding teams ensures a unified and positive brand image. This collaboration helps fine-tune communication strategies, share insights on public sentiment, brainstorm on feedback received and coordinate campaigns that strengthen the brand's image and presence.
5. How can PROs monitor public perceptions effectively?
PROs use media monitoring tools, social listening platforms, and regular feedback mechanisms to keep track of public perceptions. Analysing media coverage, social media trends, and customer feedback helps in understanding and addressing any issues promptly.
