What is the most crucial element in building and maintaining a high-performing organisational culture? According to Sanjiv Puri, chairman, ITC, an organisation needs to have a shared vision, where every employee understands and comprehends the vision and is aligned to it. “The teams responsible for delivery of business goals must be empowered. They should have the resources to deliver - not just financial resources, but also resources within the enterprise. If innovation is important, does the enterprise have a fully-equipped innovation centre? If digital is important do the employees have access to the right tools, do they have access to specialised talent to be able to execute it,” explains Puri.
Puri says that teams should be structured in a manner that they have complete ownership around a particular product or market so that they have the capacity to take the decisions and execute the decisions. “Such teams have to be challenged, and need to be given goals that reflect a significant step forward.” For a high-performance culture in a large organisation, there also needs to be a strong value system that integrates the organisation. “For instance, excellence in quality. That is something that has to be ingrained in everybody that it is non-compromisable,” Puri further explains.
