ChatGPT Android app launched in India; details here

Widely popular ChatGPT app for Android, as well as web users, has gone live in Google PlayStore across India, according to a tweet by the parent company OpenAI. The app is also available in the US, Bangladesh and Brazil. "ChatGPT for Android is now available for download in the US, India, Bangladesh and Brazil! We plan to expand the rollout to additional countries over the next week," says the latest tweet by OpenAI.

The development comes months after OpenAI launched the iOS version of the app in May this year.

Since its launch in November last year by OpenAI's founder Sam Altman, ChatGPT, a conversational AI chatbot, has garnered immense popularity amongst millennials and Genz.

Android users can download ChatGPT via Google PlayStore on their electronic devices. After downloading the app, the user will have to log in using an email id.

"This official app is free, syncs your history across devices, and brings you the latest model improvements from OpenAI," says the app.

The app warns users to be cautious while sharing sensitive information as chats may be reviewed by OpenAI’s AI trainers to improve the system. The app says that ChatGPT will also control the users’ chat history. "[ChatGPT will] Decide whether new chats on this device will appear in your history and be used to improve our systems," says the app.

"ChatGPT may provide inaccurate information about people, places and facts," it adds.

The subscription of the ChatGPT app will be soon rolled out in India, says the company. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Plus in February last year. "We're launching a pilot subscription plan for ChatGPT, a conversational AI that can chat with you, follow-up questions, and challenge incorrect assumptions," OpenAI's website says.

Notably, the ads-free ChatGPT AI Assistants app is already available in India with a subscription fee of ₹990 per week, ₹1,450 per month and ₹6,850 for a lifetime. Through ChatGPT AI Assistants, users can have access to the GTP-4 model, unlimited questions and answers, and a high word limit for questions and answers.

In January, Microsoft Corp announced a multibillion-dollar investment in ChatGPT owner OpenAI to commercialise the advanced AI technologies across its consumer and enterprise products. Microsoft said this is the third phase of its long-term partnership with OpenAI. "This agreement follows our previous investments in 2019 and 2021. It extends our ongoing collaboration across AI supercomputing and research and enables each of us to independently commercialise the resulting advanced AI technologies," the Redmond, Washington-based company said.

However, despite ChatGPT's popularity globally, the Indian government has raised concerns regarding AI language-based models like ChatGPT, Bard and Bing AI, for the possible misuse by scammers to target individuals and organisations. "AI-based applications can generate output in the form of text as written by humans. This can be used to disseminate fake news, scams, generate misinformation, create phishing messages, or produce deep fake texts," cautions government agency CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).
