Acquisition of British football club Blackburn Rovers propelled Venky’s into the global limelight, but a poor performance last season and its eventual relegation from the Premier League has hurt its fortunes. Desai, a cricket person, is said to be overseeing changes in management and focussing on getting back into the league. That apart, Venky’s sales have grown 16%, but profits fell 45%. In the last few months, Venky’s share price has rallied 50% in light of new business activities—animal feed and a burgers business. Desai has invested Rs 34 crore on an aqua feed plant in Bangladesh as well. The company has made big bets, but a solid follow-up is now needed.
