As head of the India business, Nakhate continues to focus on transaction banking— a step that helped shore up revenues in a weaker environment. India is now the most profitable market for the firm in the Asia-Pacific region, asserts Nakhate, adding that the country contributes nearly a third of the region’s profits. For the year ending March 31, 2014, Bank of America recorded a 49% jump in post-tax profit and a 30% rise in revenues. Its top deals include the firstever fixed-for-life perpetual bond issue for Reliance, the largest-ever high-yield bond by Vedanta, the first-ever dual-currency overseas borrowing by Bharti Airtel, and another overseas borrowing by Tata Steel, the biggest by any Tata company till date.
