For someone who started out as a housewife with no business experience, Saraogi appears to have a knack for entrepreneurship. Since she took over Balrampur Chini Mills in 1982, she’s increased sugar production from 1,600 tonnes daily to 73,500 tonnes. Today, Balrampur is India’s second-largest sugar producer, with sales of Rs 2,000 crore and 10 factories across Uttar Pradesh. How did she do it? When she took over, “her address was the plant”, says son Vivek. Early this year, she told Fortune India she always sought out perfection as well as efficiency and was willing to go to any extent to achieve that.
