MONIKA SHERGILL’S approach has helped Netflix connect with audience seeking local content. She has built a diverse portfolio which ranges from original series with local flavours such as Kathal to mainstream movies such as Jawan. To resonate with varied audiences, Shergill has roped in distinguished filmmakers such as Neeraj Pandey and joined hands with the country’s largest production house Yash Raj Films. She is also trying to tap different genres and last year partnered with comedian Kapil Sharma for The Great Kapil Sharma Show. Her efforts have paid off. In 2023, Indian series and films garnered over one billion views on Netflix. The platform won several prestigious international awards last year. The docuseries The Elephant Whisperers won an Oscar, stand-up comedy special Vir Das: Landing won an Emmy and Scoop was awarded Best Asian Series at Busan International Film Festival. Netflix India reported a revenue of ₹2,214 crore in FY23, a 24% jump YoY, while net profit rose 75% to ₹35 crore, according to RoC filings. As per an October report by Bernstein, Netflix had around 6.5 million subscribers in India.
