Nine years, three funds, many marquee investors and enviable exits later, Ramnath remains the only woman in India to have built an independent private equity platform, which manages over $1 billion in assets. In June, EMPEA—a non-profit organisation of more than 300 PE firms managing $5 trillion in assets across 130 countries—appointed her to its board of directors, making her the only woman on the board. The IPO of Indian Energy Exchange in 2017 was a testing time for her. Despite a host of challenges, including foreign portfolio investors not being allowed to invest in the IPO, she managed to make five times returns on investment. That’s the mark of an outstanding money manager.
