Rave reviews seem a matter of course for Ritu Kumar, as seen at the recently concluded Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2013. Kumar, a 45-year veteran of the industry, gave a modern twist to 1920s Parisian Art Deco and gave it a modern, contemporary hue. The reviews underlined her power quotient at a time when foreign designer wear is populating India’s high street. Kumar is now taking her “Ritu Kumar” designer brand to affluent tier II towns such as Raipur and Surat. A new sub-brand “Label by Ritu Kumar”, a prêt line of contemporary Indian design with western silhouettes, has also been launched. Last fiscal, Kumar’s business grew 18%.
