It has always had an uneasy relationship with its customers and stakeholders in India, but this year, Monsanto found itself almost at war with a farmers’ union, the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, over royalty fees. This did not help the already beleaguered company, and recently, it announced its exit from the branded cotton seeds space here. Nirula’s challenge will be to restore the company’s image, as well as protect the remaining business. Monsanto will continue to supply other (unbranded) cotton seeds, besides vegetable seeds.
