It was trial by fire for Ananthasubramanian when she took over the country’s second-largest public sector bank in August 2015. Not only had the bank piled up huge amounts of non-performing assets, it had come under the scrutiny of the Reserve Bank of India for the deteriorating quality of its assets. Despite Ananthasubramanian’s efforts, the problems haven’t gone away and the bank continues to post heavy losses led by provisioning requirements. Her aggressive stance on NPAs and wilful defaulters— she refused to take a haircut on Vijaya Mallaya’s loans— will be crucial in pulling the bank out of a bad time.
