Vizhinjam port kicks off with arrival of first mothership
Vizhinjam port, India's first deepwater trans-shipment port located near Kovalam Beach in Kerala, marked a milestone with the arrival of its first mothership, the MV San Fernando from Maersk, one of the world's largest shipping companies. The berthing of MV San Fernando was part of a trial run ahead of commercial operations. This event was celebrated with a traditional water salute as the vessel successfully berthed at the port, carrying over 2,000 containers.
"Historic Day as Vizhinjam welcomes its 1st container vessel! This milestone marks India's entry into global transshipment and ushers in a new era in India's maritime logistics, positioning Vizhinjam as a key player in global trade routes. Jai Hind!,” Gautam Adani shares via X.
In 2015, Adani emerged as the sole bidder awarded the tender by the Kerala Government, with construction commencing on December 5 of that year. The Vizhinjam port faced delays due to adverse weather conditions such as Cyclone Okhi, challenges with sea conditions, shortages of granite needed for breakwater construction, and opposition from local fishing communities and Church groups regarding issues related to relocation and land acquisition.
