Google OS Android 15 announced; here’s what's new

Google unveiled its next-generation operating system Android 15 today. And as a departure from tradition, it wasn’t released alongside the new Pixel 9 series this year, which was announced a month ago. Currently, only the source code has been made available to developers through the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).

While Pixel users can expect Android 15 to be rolled out in the coming weeks, as major brands test their custom Android 15 skins such as OneUI 7, NothingOS 3, and OxygenOS 15, users with compatible devices from brands like Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, and Nothing will have to wait a bit longer, with Google indicating a broader rollout within the "coming months" and can anticipate a host of significant improvements that should make the wait worthwhile.

Although some users did get an early taste of Android 15 through Google's Android Beta for Pixel program, which allowed eligible users to test pre-release versions up to Beta 4, now with the official unveiling of Android 15, Google has introduced a range of new features focused on enhancing accessibility, usability, and security.

Unlike Apple's iOS updates, which often bring major interface changes, Android 15 focuses on refining the interaction between apps and devices.

Users will see the integration of Google's Gemini with the TalkBack screen reader, which now offers detailed audio descriptions for images, making digital content more accessible for those with visual impairments. Additionally, the Circle to Search feature now includes a Shazam-like music identification tool, allowing users to easily identify songs by tapping a music button while watching a video or overhearing a tune in a public place.

Other notable features include support for offline Google Maps on Wear OS 5, allowing users to navigate without a phone, and Chrome’s new “Listen to this page” feature, which can read web pages aloud. 

Google has also extended its Earthquake Alerts System to new Android users from the US which will provide early warnings using crowdsourced accelerometer data from Android devices. This system can alert users seconds before shaking begins, offering two types of notifications: "Be Aware" for light shaking and "Take Action" for more severe events. 

These key features have been designed to enhance user experience, security, and connectivity. These include single-tap passkeys for streamlined authentication, theft detection, and improved multitasking for larger screens. The OS also features a redesigned volume control panel, the ability to limit app access and partial screen recording. Enhancements like predictive back gestures and in-app camera control, along with satellite connectivity for communication in areas without cellular service, further elevate the user experience.

Android 15 also, will also bring quality-of-life improvements such as sensitive notifications for 2FA codes, live protection against dangerous websites, and offline Google Maps for Wear OS. The update also includes fun and creative features like Gboard’s Emoji Kitchen, which lets users create custom emoji mashups, and AI-powered photo editing tools in Google Photos.
