WhatsApp is planning to introduce a new feature called the audio call bar, which is currently being tested by select Android beta users, according to a report by WABetaInfo. These testers are currently exploring this feature designed to manage outgoing audio calls within the app.

The functionality of the new audio call bar is such that when users minimise the call, they are greeted with a redesigned call bar at the top of the interface, offering improved control over outgoing calls. Previously, users had to tap the green status bar to return to the call, but with the new call bar, they can easily mute or end the call directly without needing to navigate back to the call screen. The updated interface also includes a new minimise button to reduce confusion in call navigation.

“The improved interface features a new minimise button to mitigate confusion about call navigation, and redesigned buttons at the top of the screen to make them more visible and distinguishable,” the report says.

WABetaInfo adds that the new call bar provides substantial benefits for users by improving multitasking capabilities. The android testers state that it allows users to manage outgoing calls easily, enabling them to continue with other tasks or conversations within the app while still having quick access to certain call controls. WABetaInfo also mentions that users can experiment with a more modern interface for the call bar.

Zoom control feature

In addition to this feature, WhatsApp is also introducing a zoom control feature for the camera to select iOS beta testers. A new button has been added, allowing users to adjust zoom levels effortlessly while recording, thereby enhancing their ability to create precise photo and video content. This camera zoom feature is included in WhatsApp update version 24.9.10.75. Previously, users had to maintain contact with the camera button and swipe up or down to adjust the zoom level while recording, potentially resulting in imprecise outcomes. This additional button simplifies the process of refining the zoom without disrupting the recording, granting users enhanced control for creating photo and video content, as per WABetaInfo.

“This addition allows for a more precise and versatile camera experience, enabling users to zoom in and out before taking a photo and while recording a new video. It’s important to note that it’s likely that more improvements for the camera are on the way,” it adds.

Additionally, the messaging app announced that WhatsApp was introducing a hands-free camera mode for video recording, aiming to enhance user convenience. This update allows for easier video capture without continuously pressing a button.
