After a 9-year-long legal battle, the Supertech twin towers in Noida were finally demolished on Sunday afternoon after months of preparations and planning. The country's biggest demolition was carried out using over 3,700 kg of explosives, which brought the structure to the ground in just 9 seconds by the 'waterfall implosion' technique.

The buildings, located in Sector-93 A of Noida, were demolished under the supervision of the Noida Authority and the Central Building Research Institute. According to an official of Edifice Engineering, the company which was tasked with the demolition, there was no damage to the residential towers in the adjoining Emerald Court society.

The demolition of nearly 100-metre-tall towers, taller than Delhi's iconic Qutub Minar (73 metres), was conducted after the Supreme Court last year ordered to raze the structures for violation of building norms in "collusion with district officials, holding that illegal construction has to be dealt with strictly to ensure compliance with the rule of law".

The twin towers were razed after a 9-year legal battle between a group of senior citizens and Supertech. The Allahabad High Court had first ordered the demolition of these two towers in April 2014. The demolition order came as it was proved in the court that the structures were constructed in violation of building regulations. The HC had also ordered the company to reimburse the money to homebuyers.

However, Supertech soon appealed against the HC verdict in the Supreme Court. After several hearings, on August 31, 2021, the SC bench comprising Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and M.R. Shah upheld the Allahabad HC order and asked the company and local authorities to demolish these towers at the builder's expense. The SC bench also said the Noida Authority and the construction company had engaged in "nefarious complicity".
