A FAMILY BUSINESS FOCUSED TO BE A CHANGEMAKER FOR GREATER GOOD

Mongia Steel Group of Companies, a family owned business founded and led by the visionary leader Dr. Gunwant Singh Mongia, is now focused and committed to implement very large impact social projects and make remarkable contributions in various areas such as child nutrition, education, livelihood generation, and healthcare for the tribal communities and other economically disadvantageous sections of the society.

Set up in 1997 in Giridih, Jharkhand, Mongia Steel Limited along with its group companies such as Santpuria Alloys Pvt. Ltd. and Nanak Hi-Tech Private Limited, is one of the leading iron and steel manufacturing companies in Jharkhand and Bihar. Mongia Steel is known for superior quality of its steel products, especially TMT bars and tubes. But apart from the iron and steel businesses, Mongia Steel Limited is also known for its committed and unique initiatives in philanthropy.

Mongia Green Foundation

Mongia Green Foundation, a charitable trust, was set up by Mongia Steel Limited in the year 2013. Thereafter it has been involved in:

1. Rehabilitation and mainstreaming of the children of Birhor community, one of the most endangered communities in India; the Foundation maintains a Government hostel in Giridih for these children where they get food, clothing, primary healthcare, education – all at no cost.

2. Tribal welfare and rural development including sponsoring higher studies of many meritorious rural youth who do not have the means to fund their studies.

3. Skill development and livelihood development.

4. Healthcare related social welfare.

What’s New Now?

Project Santushti

The Foundation is rolling out a project named Santushti which aims to provide supplementary nutrition to needy children through a simple meal of egg, milk, and banana – essential foods which, unfortunately, most tribal children and the children from other economically backward sections of the population in the villages of Jharkhand and many other states miss in their daily meals.

Santushti also aims to provide out-of-school tuition to tribal children as well as to the children from other economically backward sections of the population to improve the overall learning outcome and thereby aiding in reducing school drop-outs. Currently being implemented in Baksidih and Magrodih, two villages in Jharkhand, the project will be scaled up and scaled out across few other states across India.

Social Technology Platform

The Foundation is all set to launch a social technology platform on the web and mobile in August, 2021, which will empower everyone, who is willing to give something to the needy, to be able to do so without any difficulty.

The technology platform will also enable everybody, who needs something essential but does not have the means to get, access a donor and receive his or her giving with dignity.

Dr. Gunwant Singh Mongia, Chairman of the Mongia Steel Group of Companies and also the Chairman of Mongia Green Foundation feels that, “Often, even if we are willing to give, we do not know whom to and where to. We are not sure to trust every telecaller who is asking for a donation on behalf of an NGO. This is a key issue”.

The technology platform that the Foundation is building will have the process to check and validate the real needs and thus make it easy for everyone who wants to give.

The Foundation will launch this technology platform pan India and then take it international within three to five years. Dr. Mongia said, “I believe this will create a very large impact in the not-for-profit and for-impact sector and benefit millions of givers and receivers.”

The Team

The Directors on the board of Mongia Steel Limited and other group companies are involved in these projects. Dr. Gunwant Singh Mongia, his wife Trilochan Kaur, his son and a Director of the company, Mr. Harinder Singh Mongia provide the overall leadership.

The top leadership is supported by a very talented team and advisors. The team consists of experts in web and mobile technologies, education management, social project management, and operations management.

Need for Support

Dr. Mongia strongly believes in his and his team’s abilities to pull off such very large impact social projects. He is also very confident of getting support from all quarters – from corporate and institutional donors, from individual donors, from other not-for-profit enterprises, and also from the Governments.
