JSW Steel subsidiary to invest $110 mn in Texas facility
JSW Steel USA announced an investment of $110 million in its Baytown Texas manufacturing facility. The company plans to invest in mill modernisation projects with sustainable technology and equipment to produce high-quality monopile steel plates.
US plans to expand offshore wind energy by deploying 30 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind by 2030 to power 10 million homes with clean energy, a press statement said.
The manufacturing “through this investment aligns with the Buy America requirements for niche grades and sophisticated applications such as hydrocarbon pipelines, offshore wind towers, offshore wind platforms, high-density pressure vessels, monopile steel plates and platforms for offshore wind towers,” it says.
Announced at the 10th SelectUSA Investment Summit hosted by the US Department of Commerce in Maryland, Parth Jindal, Director at JSW Steel USA commented, “The new upgrades at our Plate Mill support the long-term ESG initiative of JSW USA and support decarbonization of the Energy Spectrum in the United States of America.”
“These investments have the potential to significantly reduce US import reliance in the infrastructure and renewable energy sectors,” he adds. This aligns with the firm’s efforts to abide by the Department of Energy’s emission reduction priorities and promote industrial decarbonisation across the iron & steel industry.
Additionally, the company says it will expand its ‘Made In USA’ product portfolio by insourcing the production of steel slabs from its facilities at Mingo Junction, Ohio, where the company recently made a $145 million investment to upgrade its “clean steel” manufacturing processes.
JSW Steel aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 42% from its steel-making operations by 2030 and has committed to achieving net neutrality in carbon emissions for all operations under its direct control by 2050.
These new projects are expected to be completed and commissioned by FY26.
“I am proud to announce this investment, as a reflection of the long-lasting relationship between the US and India in this critical industry," said Rob Simon, CEO of JSW Steel USA.
Through these proposed investments, JSW Steel USA intends to enhance its domestic manufacturing capabilities for end-use within the renewable energy and infrastructure sectors.
The company is a subsidiary of $24 billion JSW Steel Ltd, with over 800 employees in the United States. JSW Steel presently has a capacity of 29.7 MTPA in India and the USA, and plans to take the total capacity to 43.5 MTPA by September 2027, with its next phase of India plans.
