Special session of Parliament begins

The five-day special session of Parliament began today amid prolonged uncertainty and cloud over the agenda of the session, which comes close on the heels of the monsoon session, which concluded on August 11. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Lok Sabha at 11 a.m.

When the government announced a special session of Parliament a couple of weeks back, it did not mention the agenda that would be taken up, following which the Opposition parties raised a concern about the manner in which the special session had been called.

The government then came out with the legislative agenda for the session, according to which four bills are a part of the government’s legislative business in the special session of Parliament beginning today.

Chief Election Commissioners and other Election Commissioners (Appointment Conditions of Service and Term of Services) Bill, 2023, introduced in the Rajya Sabha during the monsoon session will be taken up by the Lok Sabha.

'The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023', and 'The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023' will also be taken up in the Lok Sabha. 'The Post Office Bill, 2023' has also been listed in the Lok Sabha and aims to repeal the Indian Post Office Act, 1898. 

The house proceedings will shift to the new building of the Parliament from tomorrow.
