Meesho's cultural values come from 2017 crisis: 40u40 2024 Vidit Aatrey

Vidit Aatrey, the CEO of Meesho, shares the journey of building a platform that has democratised internet commerce for Indians and millions of small businesses. He reflects on the challenges faced along the way, particularly in 2017, a year that tested the company’s resilience and resolve.

Aatrey discusses the tough times when Meesho had limited capital but had to continue on its mission. He recalls the difficulty of motivating the team during this period and how these challenges ultimately strengthened the company’s culture and character.

"The most important cultural values in the company come from that period. Every crisis is an opportunity—that’s what the 2017 period was for us, and I am grateful it happened," he says.

Moreover, in candid reflection, he emphasises the importance of taking risks early, even considering starting Meesho right out of college at the age of 22.

"There are obviously good things which come out of experience, but the energy that comes from youth and the irrational optimism really works well for startups," he says.
