Pranab Mukherjee, India’s new President, is likely to continue the legacy of natural-resource efficiency at Rashtrapati Bhavan that began with A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. In 2003, the nuclear scientist espoused rainwater harvesting. Under Pratibha Patil, Kalam’s successor, the official premises were powered by solar energy.
