Gemini AI's response against PM Modi direct violation: Rajeev Chandrasekhar warns Google

Google found itself in a pickle on Friday after Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar warned the big tech giant against the responses by its new generative AI model Gemini AI on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

His statement came after an X (formerly known as Twitter) user shared Gemini AI's response to the question "Is Modi a fascist?" In response, the generative AI model said that Modi has been accused of implementing policies that some experts have characterised as fascist. Gemini AI, further added that these accusations are based on a number of factors, including the BJP’s Hindu nationalist ideology, its crackdown on dissent and its use of violence against religious minorities.

Taking to X, Chandrasekhar said that "these are direct violations of Rule 3 (1) (b) of Intermediary Rules (IT Rules) of the IT act and violations of several provisions of the Criminal Code."

Notably, this is not the first time that Chandrasekhar has voiced his concerns about the unfettered use of AI. In June last year, the union minister said that the government is planning to regulate artificial intelligence for the ethical use of emerging technologies without disrupting innovation.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Google also faced flak after Gemini AI presented inaccuracies in historical image generation depictions by Gemini AI. "We're working to improve these kinds of depictions immediately. Gemini AI’s image generation does generate a wide range of people. And that’s generally a good thing because people around the world use it. But it’s missing the mark here," the tech giant says in its response.

Following this, the tech behemoth halted the image generation of people. "We're already working to address recent issues with Gemini’s image generation feature. While we do this, we’re going to pause the image generation of people and will re-release an improved version soon."

The two-month-old Gemini AI—which was launched in December last year—is the latest generative AI offering by the Alphabet-owned company. The model comprises three versions: Pro, Ultra and Nano, with the Pro version already accessible and the Ultra version scheduled for an early release this year.

At present, Google has integrated Gemini Pro into its chatbot Bard, a direct competitor to rival OpenAI's ChatGPT. While text-based interactions with Gemini-powered Bard are possible, Google has promised upcoming support for other modalities. The update is accessible in 170 countries and territories but is currently confined to the English language only.

Gemini is anticipated to significantly influence the AI industry, representing Google's most powerful AI model to date. It powers various applications and devices, such as the Bard chatbot and Pixel 8 Pro.
