Tata Motors’ electric future
It seems the electric vehicle segment in India is buzzing. Following the government’s intent to make India an all-electric vehicle market by 2030, Tata Motors reaffirmed its commitment to electric vehicles at the Auto Expo 2018 on Wednesday.
The company exhibited two concept cars--the H5X and 45X--based on its two-architecture strategy. It also displayed six electric vehicles, three in the commercial vehicle segment—the 2m electric bus, Magic EV, and Iris EV--and the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, and Racemo EV in the passenger car category. The company is showcasing ‘smart mobility’ as a concept in this season of the Auto Expo.
“We are making a serious commitment towards innovation, future of mobility and our commitment to electric vehicles is total. We are making a significant investment in EVs and will launch six new products in this segment,” said N. Chandrasekaran, chairman, Tata Group, at the Auto Expo 2018.
He, however, did not disclose the investment in the electric vehicle space.
“Our...pavilion has been designed keeping the future Smart Cities and emerging market trends in mind. Our exhibits are a clear indication of our capability to meet the growing aspirations of our customers,” said Guenter Butschek, CEO and managing director of the auto maker.
The company clocked 43% growth in sales last month, selling nearly 60,000 units in January 2018 compared with 41,428 units in the corresponding period last year. The homegrown auto major also registered a whopping 55% growth in its passenger vehicle sales in January 2018, and 38% growth in commercial vehicles in the same period.
