Google partners with Adani, CleanMax for clean energy supply

Google unveiled two significant partnerships aimed at advancing its clean energy initiatives in India at the 10th Google for India event in New Delhi today. The U.S.-based company has partnered with Adani Group and CleanMax for clean energy supply. This announcement follows a July report revealing that Google’s emissions had increased by nearly 50% over the past five years, primarily due to the incorporation of artificial intelligence into many of its core products.

Collaborating with Adani, Google plans to implement energy solutions from a 61 MW solar-wind hybrid project in Gujarat to support its cloud regions. Additionally, a partnership with Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions (CleanMax) will see the development of a 125.4 MW hybrid project. These projects will contribute to Google’s goal of powering its global operations with 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030, while reducing CO2 emissions across its Indian operations.

Giorgio Fortunato, head of clean energy and power for Google Asia Pacific, said that partnering with Adani will enable Google to implement energy solutions supporting clean energy supply from a new 61 MW solar-wind hybrid project in Gujarat. This initiative aims to further Google's decarbonisation goals for its cloud regions in India.

“Wind and solar power complement each other. When the sun isn’t shining in Rajasthan, we can still rely on wind in Karnataka and Gujarat,” says Fortunato.

Google also announced two clean energy partnerships at the event today, which are set to contribute 186 MW of clean energy to India’s grid by 2026.

Google has partnered with Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions (CleanMax) to develop a 125.4 MW hybrid project, featuring 66 MW of solar capacity in Rajasthan and 59.4 MW of wind capacity in Karnataka. These projects will connect to India’s national grid, aiding in the decarbonisation of Google’s cloud services and offices across the country. This initiative aligns with Google’s larger objective of powering all its global operations with 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.

“This landmark initiative supports Google’s sustainable growth in India and underscores Google’s commitment to source clean energy for our operations in every grid where we operate. We believe in the power of meaningful strategic collaborations to drive true impact and transition to resilient low carbon systems to continue operating our businesses sustainably,” Fortunato adds.

These projects are scheduled to begin commercial operations in the fourth quarter of 2025, producing around 350,000 million kWh of clean energy each year. This will lead to an annual reduction of approximately 250,000 tons of CO2 emissions, comparable to planting 14.7 million trees every year, highlighting their role in addressing climate change, CleanMax states in a release.
