When it comes to risk, the Bansals are two of a kind. Flipkart entered 70 cities in 2012 and around 50 last year. It now serves 150. “Shopping has to be delightful and simple for everyone in India,” says Sachin. “It’s an unsolved problem in tier II and tier III cities. Our approach is: We will go into a city and make orders happen,” Binny adds. Demonstrating scale like no other, last year Flipkart averaged 130,000 orders a day (or 4,000 items shipped per hour). The Bansals raised $360 million last July. With 14 million customers, they sped into a new category, fashion, shrinking the gap with Jabong. Estimates peg gross merchandising value of Flipkart’s fashion and apparel retailing business at over $10 million per month, while Jabong is at $12 million.
