Xiaomi’s smartphones have shaken up the cutthroat Indian market since debuting exclusively on Flipkart last year. Jain tweeted in December that the company had sold a million phones here in less than six months with no physical stores, no marketing, and a bare-bones team of 20. Jain’s e-commerce nous—he was earlier the CEO of fashion retailer Jabong.com—is an asset for the Beijing-headquartered company that recently became the world’s highest-valued startup. More precious is his calm leadership during crises, such as the patent battle with chipmaker Ericsson that temporarily halted sales last year.
